A New Year Prayer for a Fresh Start
You don't have to wait for January to start over with God
SaveMost of us walk into a new year carrying the old one. The plan that didn't work, the words we wish we could take back, the promise to do better that lasted about nine days.
You don't need a clean calendar to start over with God. His mercies are new every morning, and that includes this one. This prayer is for handing Him the year behind you and asking Him to walk with you into the next. Below it are ten King James verses about beginning again.
The prayer
Lord,
I'm coming to You with the year I actually had, not the one I planned. Thank You for carrying me through the parts I don't talk about. Thank You for every morning You gave me, even the ones I wasted.
Forgive me for the ways I ran ahead of You, and for the days I gave You only what was left. I don't want to bring the old guilt into a new year. I leave it here with You.
Give me a clean heart and one clear next step. I'm not asking to see the whole road. Teach me to number my days, to be slower to speak, and to come to You first when I'm afraid.
Bless my home and the people You've given me. Whatever this year holds, the hard news and the good news, let me meet it with You beside me.
I'm starting over, and I'm starting with You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
How to pray it
- Pray it slowly, once, before you write down a single goal for the year.
- At the second paragraph, stop and name the thing you most want to leave behind.
- Pick one verse below and read it each morning for the first week.
- If you slip by the second week, don't wait for next January. Pray it again. His mercies are new tomorrow too.

Ten KJV verses for a fresh start
1. Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
22It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Written in the ruins of Jerusalem. If mercy could be new there, it can be new where you are.
2. Isaiah 43:18-19 (KJV)
18Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. 19Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Pray: Lord, help me stop rereading last year, and show me what You are doing now.
3. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
The new start isn't something you earn in January. In Christ, it has already begun.
4. Philippians 3:13-14 (KJV)
13Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul had more to regret than most of us, and he chose to keep walking forward.
5. Psalm 51:10 (KJV)
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
David's prayer after his worst year. Make it the first line of yours.
6. Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
A better goal than most resolutions: ask God to teach you what your days are for.
7. Psalm 37:5 (KJV)
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Hand Him the plan before you make the plan.
8. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Good for the day your new-year plan stops making sense.
9. Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
For the year you are starting tired. Strength comes from waiting on Him, not from willpower.
10. Psalm 143:8 (KJV)
Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
