Prayers for a Prodigal Child

Few prayers are as heavy as the ones for a child who has walked away from faith, from the family, or from themselves. You raised them, you prayed over them, and now you watch from a distance.

In Jesus' story of the prodigal son, the father saw his son "when he was yet a great way off." He was watching the road. These prayers are for parents and grandparents still watching. Below are King James verses of hope for the waiting.

A prayer for prodigal

God,

Father, You know where my child is tonight, even when I don't. I miss who they were and I love who they are. I can't make them come home, but You can reach places I can't. Follow them. Send someone they'll listen to. Keep them safe while they wander, and turn their heart back toward You. Keep my heart soft so the door is open when they come. Help me wait with hope and not bitterness.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bible verses for parents of prodigals (KJV)

And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy. And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border.

But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;
